Vacation is that time or times, (if you’re lucky), of the year you look forward to taking a break from the hard work of your “9-5” job. It’s a time to celebrate your job, a time to get away and clear your thoughts, or it’s a time explore and have a new adventure if only for a week or two. We all celebrate our own version of Vacation, whether it’s a mountain bike trip to Utah, sightseeing trip along the east coast or heading to the Yucatan Peninsula for a few days of sun, sea & fun, the same issue comes up. You need the right clothes for the daytime activity AND you need the right clothes for evening festivities. Without taking a “Steamer Trunk” full of clothes how do you manage carry off the style and elegance in a bag that fits in the overhead compartment of an airplane?
Just where does this concept of taking a vacation start from anyway, hasn’t it been around like forever? Turns out it’s a relatively recent invention in the overall scheme of things. Historically, the idea of travel for recreation was a luxury that only wealthy people could afford. In the Puritan culture of early America, taking a break from work for reasons other than weekly observance of the Sabbath was frowned upon. Hence the idea behind the character of Bob Cratchit only taking a few hours off on Christmas eve from his Uncle Scrooge. Our modern day version of vacation began with a religious movement encouraging spiritual retreat and recreation. The middle and working classes took this notion of breaking from work and expanded to what we see now. In the US the typical vacation lasts only 2 weeks until you’ve been with a company at least 5 years and sometimes 10 years before you get an extra week or 2. It’s not uncommon to see 4 weeks in Europe starting out. I like that better J
How do you like to spend your time off from work? I’ll bet at least part of it involves some kind of relaxation. If you’re like a lot of people, planning and dreaming of the vacation is half the fun, at least until you get to the part of planning what you’ll where and then finally get to the part where you have to decide between what you want to wear and what you can’t take with you because there isn’t room. What we bring with us and what we leave behind can be the stress that breaks the camel’s back if we don’t have a plan to follow.
